Grunge was well on its way to becoming passe when one of the genre’s most distinctive bands played their last gig with their mysterious lead singer 20 years ago this month.
Alice in Chains played their last show with original lead singer Layne Staley on July 3, 1996 while touring with Kiss. Here’s a clip of them performing, sad but fittingly, “We Die Young”:
Though he would remain with the band for six more years, Staley never performed live with Alice in Chains again as his health steadily declined and he became increasingly reclusive until his death in 2002. But not before leaving behind an impressive catalog of songs.
This is an excellent version of has become one of my favorite Alice in Chains tunes.
How about you? What’s your favorite Alice in Chains tune?
About the Author
Hi, I'm Pete Rizzo, early morning elixir for your weekends. I love music and I love talking about it. I grew up listening to bands like Rush (best band on the planet!), Van Halen (Diamond Dave all the way), AC/DC (Bon rules!) and Genesis (the Gabriel years). But my true love is progressive rock and heavy metal. The louder, crunchier, more bombastic and self-indulgent, the better! When I’m not on the air, I’m either training in martial arts, deciding which tattoo I should get next, reading a good book (I still enjoy turning actual pages), or my wife and I are planning our next big travel excursion. I’m on every Saturday and Sunday morning. You can also follow me on on Twitter @PeteRizzoWBAB. I’d love to hear from you.
