Stevie Nicks reportedly once said that Fleetwood Mac created the best music when in the worst shape. That may not be better exemplified with perhaps their most legendary album, which turns 40 this month.
Questions abound over whether Fleetwood Mac will commence work on a new album, which if it becomes a reality would their first one with the entire classic lineup in 30 years. Till then, now’s a good time to reflect on their release of “Rumours” on February 4, 1977. That the album came out at all may have been nothing short of a small miracle with all the heartache and infighting within the band bubbling over at that time.
The “romantic geometry” of songs like “The Chain” may have best encapsulated the strife. Let’s see, in short:
–John and Christine McVie’s marriage broke up;
–Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks called it quits; and
–Mick Fleetwood and Nicks became an item.
But all the turmoil was worth its weight in Grammy gold when “Rumours” won the Album of the year, one of its many accolades.
As for my favorite tune off of ‘Rumours’, this Lindsey Buckingham classic is still tops for me,…
,…with this gem by Christine McVie a close second!
How about you? What are your favorite tunes off of “Rumours”?
Hi, I'm Pete Rizzo, early morning elixir for your weekends.
I love music and I love talking about it. I grew up listening to bands like Rush (best band on the planet!), Van Halen (Diamond Dave all the way), AC/DC (Bon rules!) and Genesis (the Gabriel years). But my true love is progressive rock and heavy metal. The louder, crunchier, more bombastic and self-indulgent, the better!
When I’m not on the air, I’m either training in martial arts, deciding which tattoo I should get next, reading a good book (I still enjoy turning actual pages), or my wife and I are planning our next big travel excursion.
I’m on every Saturday and Sunday morning. You can also follow me on on Twitter @PeteRizzoWBAB. I’d love to hear from you.
