In honor of the late Carrie Fisher, SNL recently aired the episode that she hosted back in 1978, which incidentally featured an iconic music performance by what many call the person who best embodied the original free spirit of ‘Saturday Night Live’.

One of comedy’s first rock stars, Belushi’s performance of ‘Soul Man’ alongside Dan Akroyd remains one of my time favorite SNL moments, one in a litany of classic ones that made Rolling Stone nominate him its all-time best SNL cast member.

Rock and Roll Brainiacs

If you’re a parent who insists that your kids turn off their music while doing their homework, that request may not hold weight for much longer thanks to Dr. James Hetfield.

The Metallica legend now has a PhD in astrophysics. Evidently he found time between his day job as lead singer and rhythm guitarist extraordinaire for one of music’s pre-eminent thrash metal bands to go to school.

He’s not the only rock legend moonlighting as an astrophysicist, either. Brian May of Queen also holds a PhD in addition to his trademark ‘Red Special’ guitar.
