By Pete Rizzo
It dawned on me recently how often the Kansas classic “Carry On Wayward Son” has been covered when I caught wind of Anthrax’s version online. They are the latest band of many to tackle the tune (and rather ably at that).
Dream Theater included part of the classic tune as part of their ‘Big Medley’ some years back,…
,…while Stryper did the honors as part of their covers disc a few years ago.
Heck, folks as disparate as the Oak Ridge Boys have covered it to the fine folks in GWAR with their truly signature take,…
What surprised me more was how little respect this tune gets on your numerous list of most covered rock songs or even best ones (and I scoured several of them, not a trace of Kansas’ tune in sight). I’ll go out on a limb here and say that including this tune in your arsenal and knowing how to rock it should be a staple for any rock or metal band.
About the Author
Hi, I'm Pete Rizzo, early morning elixir for your weekends. I love music and I love talking about it. I grew up listening to bands like Rush (best band on the planet!), Van Halen (Diamond Dave all the way), AC/DC (Bon rules!) and Genesis (the Gabriel years). But my true love is progressive rock and heavy metal. The louder, crunchier, more bombastic and self-indulgent, the better! When I’m not on the air, I’m either training in martial arts, deciding which tattoo I should get next, reading a good book (I still enjoy turning actual pages), or my wife and I are planning our next big travel excursion. I’m on every Saturday and Sunday morning. You can also follow me on on Twitter @PeteRizzoWBAB. I’d love to hear from you.
