Favorite albums of 2017

From songs we move to my favorite albums of 2017.

5) Black Country Communion – BCCIV

They were no more five years ago due to a classic butting of the heads between Glenn Hughes and Joe Bonamassa. Now they have mended fences and are back with what may be their heaviest album and strongest collection of tunes to date. Another job well done for one of rock’s most prolific and consistently rocking supergroups!

RIZZO’S RECOMMENDATIONS: “Collide”, “The Last Song For My Resting Place”, “Wanderlust”

4) John 5 – Season of the Witch

An instrumental guitar rock album made my list (shocker!). The latest disc from this axe-master who’s shredded with David Lee Roth, Marilyn Manson and currently with Rob Zombie rocks hard when it needs to and also captures the adventure and whimsy of some of the best work of the genre’s measuring stick (my opinion), Joe Satriani.

RIZZO’S RECOMMENDATIONS: “Making Monsters”, “Season of the Witch”, “Hell Haw I.G.R.”

3) Prophets of Rage – Prophets of Rage

This is likely as close as I’ll ever get to a full blown Rage Against The Machine reunion. I’ll take it! Pairing 3 of the 4 original RATM members with two of East and West Coast rap’s pioneers is as politically charged as you’d expect. And the music kicks ass!

RIZZO’S RECOMMEDATIONS: “Unf$*k the World”, “Strength in Numbers”, “Living on the 110”

2) Andy Summers – Triboluminescence

Maybe it’s because I’m embracing my inner weirdo more and more as I get older, but Summers’ 14th solo album brilliantly captures the awesomely strange Fripp-ian charm of King Crimson for me. And like many of the instrumental guitar rock albums I so enjoy, it’s a fun listen from beginning to end.

RIZZO’S RECOMMENDATIONS: “Elephant Bird”, “Pukul Bunye Bunye”, “Help from Jupiter”

,…and, the top spot goes to (drum roll),…….

1) Mastodon – Emperor of Sand

Although I love a good photo finish, 2017’s album of the year race wasn’t even close! Mastodon won in a landslide after about the third listen of their new album,… back in March! Some critics have called “Emperor of Sand” the album that metal absolutely needed this year. To which I’ll agree and unload a baseball analogy on you – Mastodon’s seventh album is a “come-from-behind World Series grand slam in the bottom of the ninth” victory for metal. There’s not one clunker on this 11-song headbanger with purpose. Mastodon have made a classic!!

RIZZO’S RECOMMENDATIONS: “Ancient Kingdom”, “Clandestiny”, “Steambreather”
