We Be “Big Mama Jama” Jamming

  • 10:20 am Thursday, August 9th, 2018 by Pete Rizzo

NOW this is what I call a jam! Steve Vai is planning a 52-hour non-stop one later this year!

He’s calling it “The Big Mama Jama Jam-a-thon” and he’s holding it next month in Los Angeles. The cool thing I love about this is that he’s opening it up to us every day folks. For $50 (first-come, first-served) you can join in on the jam four-hours. This could become more of the memorable jams of all time.

Some of my favorite live jams are below:

Toto and Weezer making cover tunes in vogue again

The mutual admiration society continues for Weezer and Toto.

Off of Weezer’s cover of “Africa”, the guys in Toto returned the favor recently with their take on Weezer’s tune, “Hash Pipe”. As for the recent roundtable as to which cover was better, I go for Toto’s.

Weezer’s cover is not bad, but it’s not the best of even most interesting take. My favorite critique of it came online describing it as “offensively beige” (HA!! Thanks Jordan).

Rock’s greatest moustaches

For anyone who thought Rush were highly out of fashion in their “2112” days, the folks at Funko think their 1970s look is A-OK.

Geddy, Alex and Neil are being turned into pop figures! Making triumphant returns are Geddy’s kimono, Alex’s printed shirt and some “professorally” righteous facial hair. Neil had what was without a doubt one of the greatest moustaches in rock.

He’s up there with some of these greats highlighted below.

John Oates,…

Derek Smalls,…

Freddie Mercury,…

,…and my personal favorite, Frank Zappa.

How about you? Which rock and roll moustache is your favorite?

Best “Bathroom Break” Songs

Dave Grohl is wading into very progressive waters these days.

He will be releasing his 23-minute tune “Play” this week. In it, he plays every instrument himself. Here’s a sneak peek below:

Now this is the kind gleeful self-indulgence that is reserved for some of my favorite bands, many of whom either fall under my most beloved genre, “progressive rock”. Some of my favorite sonic marathons are below:

–Pink Floyd – “Shine On You Crazy Diamond

–Genesis – “Supper’s Ready

–Yes – “The Gates of Delirium

–Rush – “2112

–Dream Theater – “Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
